What Happened
Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) is set for a major infrastructure overhaul, with a R10.143 billion development programme aimed at increasing capacity, improving operational efficiency, and supporting tourism and trade in the Western Cape. This initiative is part of Airports Company South Africa’s (ACSA) broader R21.7 billion investment across its airport network.
Why It Matters
The upgrade programme includes the construction of a new main runway, estimated at R6.39 billion, which will be realigned 11.5 degrees east to optimize air traffic and free up space for terminal expansion. The 3,500-metre runway will feature rapid exit and partial parallel taxiways to enhance turnaround times and scheduling flexibility, accommodating next-generation aircraft.
Additionally, the domestic terminal is set for expansion starting in April 2027, pending approvals, with a budget of R2.89 billion. This will include new contact gates, airbridges, and expanded apron space. International upgrades, valued at R863 million, will enhance immigration processing and commercial facilities.
What’s Next
These developments are expected to significantly strengthen Cape Town International Airport’s role as a critical economic gateway for the Western Cape and South Africa. The phased upgrades will ensure the airport remains competitive and reliable for both domestic and international travelers. Meanwhile, a recent fire affecting operations at the airport has been contained, causing some flight delays and a precautionary evacuation of passengers and staff, though the cause remains under investigation.
